WoundExpert Software Now Supports Physician Dictation

Net Health Systems, Inc., has partnered with M*Modal to develop a physician dictation module with real-time speech recognition within WoundExpert, giving physicians the ability to dictate directly into WoundExpert’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

Physician users will be able to generate a patient’s complete progress note by speaking naturally into this specially designed dictation form which can be accessed within the WoundExpert Visit Details screen. The form will provide playback capability, straightforward voice and keyboard edit controls, and a SOAP template format.

Incorporating M*Modal’s Speech UnderstandingTM technology within WoundExpert offers physicians an alternative to the traditional point-and-click data entry method historically used in the EMR software. This user-friendly method of data input eliminates the need for a separate transcriptionist service and eliminates any billing delays due to incomplete or non-finalized patient documentation, common with traditional dictation services.

“We are pleased to work with Net Health Systems to offer our technology to the more than 14,000 WoundExpert users,” said Michael Finke, CEO of M*Modal. “Our companies share the vision of making technology fit doctors’ workflow rather than the other way around.”

Features of the Physician Dictation module include:

  • Potential cost savings as compared to outsourced dictation and medical transcription services
  • Seamless integration into WoundExpert documentation allowing faster, more efficient creation of each patient’s Progress Note
  • Centralized documentation within the patient’s record
  • Macros utilization
  • Voice-driven, interactive editing
  • Remote playback capability

Third Quarter Software Updates Address Meaningful Use

Recently released updates to the WoundExpert software continue to address Meaningful Use requirements outlined in the final rule of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which was finalized in July 2010. The major focus of the HITECH act is to encourage broad adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) by hospitals and providers through incentives and future penalties.

Meaningful Use is a defined set of functionality that all EHRs must contain in order to promote the goals of the legislation. To achieve and qualify for Meaningful Use incentive payment, Eligible Providers must meet all of the 15 Core Set Objectives, and choose 5 of the 10 Menu Set Objectives which were established as Stage 1 criteria.

With the current upgrade, WoundExpert users will see software enhancements including:

  • Updated options to capture more comprehensive information related to smoking status
  • Updated functionality to ensure the laboratory address of a testing facility is shown in Pending Orders
  • Addition of a “patient declined” option for Race and Ethnicity drop downs
  • Expanded ability to track Test Results within Pending Orders for facilities using the Ancillary Services form

Meaningful Use development will continue into the next quarter, with specific focus on drug interaction modules, electronic prescriptions, and formulary checks, all projected to be completed by early 2011.

Net Health is the wound care community’s advocate and subject matter expert on HITECH and Meaningful Use. We are excited about WoundExpert’s role in helping our clients to demonstrate Meaningful Use and are working aggressively to become a certified EHR by early 2011.
